Celestial Crystals: Cosmic Healing, Neon Dreaming in the ‘Metapocalypse’

Over the past two decades, in which I have been working predominately in the digital art medium, I have observed the state of play transform dramatically. I started out in this medium before the rise of social media, and then later found myself immersed entirely in a social media practice. It allowed me to engage in a vast array of styles and subjects and enjoy unrestricted creativity and expression.
Recently, however, I have felt this shifting in what Katie Wight, Founder of Strong Brand Social is calling the ‘Metapocalypse’. In her recent Zoom presentation for brands she suggested that small businesses are seeing one of two options: to leave the Meta platform altogether, or to stay and attempt to influence change. I’ll be honest, I’m not feeling too inspired by either of these options.
Like many artists, I am much more interested in making work than I am in having to go head on into a political dogfight just to be able to put food on the table. This reminds me that it isn’t only artists who are being impacted by the recent changes to Meta. The rollback of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives at Meta isn't just an issue for artists — it has far-reaching consequences for small businesses, independent creators, and marginalized communities who rely on these platforms for visibility and economic survival.
For many small business owners, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, DEI programs provided necessary resources, mentorship, and algorithmic fairness to level the playing field. Without these initiatives, there's a risk that the voices and businesses that thrived under a more equitable system will now struggle to be seen.
Artists, like many businesses, depend on social media platforms to showcase their work, connect with audiences, and generate income. When the priorities shift away from inclusion and accessibility, those who don’t already have established networks or deep pockets for advertising will find it even harder to reach the people who would support their work.
This isn’t just about politics—it’s about livelihoods. It’s about whether small, independent creatives and businesses can continue to compete in a space increasingly dominated by those with the most resources. The scrapping of DEI at Meta is a reminder that the fight for fair opportunities in the digital economy is ongoing, and the impact will be felt by everyone except those who already hold the most power.
While these changes at Meta raise concerns about accessibility, visibility, and creative freedom, I refuse to let them define the future of digital art. Instead, I choose to dream of new possibilities—ones where technology uplifts, inspires, and connects us rather than limits and divides.
Among these explorations is my latest project, Celestial Crystals: Cosmic Healing, Neon Dreaming—a series of digital renders that fuse the mystical energy of crystals with a futuristic cosmic landscape. This work embodies my hope for a digital realm that remains vibrant, expansive, and inclusive, even in the face of increasing corporate constraints.
Drawing inspiration from the cultural and spiritual significance of crystals, these pieces are infused with a neon vaporwave aesthetic—glowing artifacts of resilience, healing, and limitless imagination. In a time when the digital world feels uncertain, these works are my manifestation and mantra that creativity will always find a way to shine.
Crystals have long been revered across various cultures for their beauty and purported healing properties. From ancient civilizations that believed in the power of gemstones to modern holistic practices that utilize crystals for meditation and wellness, their cultural significance spans centuries and continents. Each crystal carries its unique lore and meaning, often associated with specific energies thought to influence emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being. As the fascination with crystals continues to grow, so does the desire to explore their potential beyond the tangible, merging them with the ethereal and boundless cosmos.
The concept of blending the earthly essence of crystals with cosmic themes is not only an artistic endeavour but also a reflection of humanity's quest for healing and connection to the universe. By situating these luminous stones within a celestial framework, my Celestial Crystals seeks to create a dialogue between the physical and metaphysical, inviting viewers to contemplate the interplay of energy, beauty, and the universe's vast mysteries. This unique fusion of themes aims to evoke a sense of wonder and introspection, encouraging a deeper understanding of both the crystals themselves and their broader implications within our lives.
Let’s delve deeper into the healing power attributed to crystals, explore the vibrant characteristics of the neon vapourware aesthetic, and ultimately reflect on the intersection of art, healing, and technology that Celestial Crystals embodies. Through this journey, we will uncover not only the beauty of these crystals but also the profound meanings they carry within the realms of art and culture.
The Healing Power of Crystals
Understanding the Metaphysical Properties of Crystals
Crystals have captivated human imagination for centuries, serving not only as decorative items but also as potent symbols of healing and transformation. Rooted in ancient traditions, the belief in the metaphysical properties of crystals suggests that these natural formations possess unique energies that can influence various aspects of our lives, including the physical, emotional, and spiritual. Each crystal is thought to resonate with specific frequencies, allowing it to interact with the human energy field in distinct ways. For instance, amethyst is often associated with tranquility and balance, while rose quartz is revered for its ability to promote love and emotional healing. This profound connection between crystals and their vibrational energies sets the foundation for their significance in various healing practices, including crystal therapy, meditation, and holistic wellness.
How Crystals Are Believed to Influence Mental and Physical Health
The impact of crystals on mental and physical health is a topic of increasing interest in both spiritual and scientific communities. Many practitioners of alternative healing modalities assert that crystals can help alleviate stress, anxiety, and emotional disturbances. By placing specific crystals on or near the body, individuals may experience a shift in energy that promotes relaxation and mental clarity. Physical ailments are also said to benefit from crystal healing; for example, clear quartz is commonly used to amplify energy and promote healing, while citrine is linked to boosting energy levels and supporting the digestive system. While empirical research on the efficacy of crystal healing remains limited, anecdotal evidence and personal testimonials continue to fuel interest in these natural remedies, offering individuals a way to explore their own healing journeys.
Examples of Specific Crystals and Their Healing Attributes
To delve deeper into the realm of crystal healing, it’s essential to highlight specific crystals and the attributes they are traditionally believed to possess. I’ll just take a selection of five as examples. There are 30 images in the series, which will be included in my upcoming book, The Magic Muse: Taking the Path of Most Resilience.
Amethyst: Often referred to as a stone of peace, amethyst is believed to promote calmness, reduce stress, and enhance spiritual awareness. It is commonly used during meditation to deepen one’s connection to the higher self.
2. Rose Quartz: Known as the "love stone," rose quartz is associated with emotional healing, compassion, and self-love. It is thought to open the heart chakra, allowing for greater emotional openness and connection with oneself and others.
3. Clear Quartz: Regarded as a master healer, clear quartz is said to amplify energy and intention. It is often used in conjunction with other crystals to enhance their effects and is believed to assist in clearing negative energy from the aura.
4. Citrine: This vibrant yellow crystal is associated with positivity and abundance. It is believed to carry the energy of the sun, promoting joy, success, and creativity while also aiding in digestive issues and boosting the immune system.
5. Black Tourmaline: Known for its protective qualities, black tourmaline is often used to shield against negative energies and electromagnetic radiation. It is also believed to ground the user, helping to create a sense of stability and safety.
By understanding these specific crystals and their associated attributes, we can explore how we might integrate these natural elements into our lives, whether through physical presence or as inspiring subjects for artistic expression. In the context of Celestial Crystals, the healing properties of these stones are not only celebrated but also visually represented against the cosmic backdrop, creating a unique fusion of art, spirituality, and wellness intended to resonate on multiple levels.
Neon Vapourware Aethetics
Neon vapourware is a distinctive digital art style that evokes nostalgia while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of contemporary visual expression. Originating from the retro-futuristic visions of the 1980s and 1990s, this aesthetic is characterized by bright neon colours, soft gradients, and surreal landscapes that often blend the real with the imaginary. The use of vapourware elements—such as glitch effects, pixel art, and classical motifs—often creates an immersive visual experience that invites viewers to step into a dreamlike realm. In the context of Celestial Crystals, it's the neon glow aesthetic that serves as a backdrop in a conversation with cosmic themes.
Neon hues, with their luminescent quality, glow in the the vastness of space, the brilliance of distant stars, and the iridescence of celestial phenomena. When applied to the depiction of crystals, these colours amplify their inherent beauty and mystique, transforming each piece into a captivating visual narrative. The interplay between the vivid neon palette and the dark, expansive backdrop of the cosmos creates a contrast, drawing attention to the crystals while simultaneously suggesting their connection to the universe.
Combining Digital Techniques to Achieve a Unique Visual Style
Creating Celestial Crystals was intended to capture the essence of the vapourware aesthetic to celebrate the spiritual significance of crystals. The result is a collection of images to captivates the eye and resonate with viewers on a deeper level, merging art, healing, and cosmic wonder into a singular experience. It is intended to elevate the understanding of both the aesthetic and spiritual dimensions of crystals in a contemporary context, and reclaim the sacred power of art in the ever changing and challenging digital landscape.
